Characterisation Lesson

 Characterisation lesson

In todays lesson we went over how songs can be characterized to fit the character that is singing it and what the song is about.

"The term characterization is familiar in theatre as an actor's detailed development and delineation of a role. Applied to music, it indicates the performer's discovery, full sensing, and then delivery in sound of the es- sence of a musical moment, as if it were a character in the midst of a play's action."

When it comes to the work we did in lesson to go over this, We watched two completely different interpretations of Something's Coming from west side story, One from Glee and One from the Original film. Once we had watched them both it helped me realises that the way in which a song is performed and sung can change its tone and overall feel when it comes to what it is talking about. For example, If a song is sung in a more joyful tone of voice it can change the whole meaning than to if it was sung in a depressing tone.

Characterisation in my piece

When it comes to my solo, I believe that the Characterisation of the singing is well-done, However can be improved to give it more meaning. For example, If I make the start of the song more quite it will then make the end more impactful whilst also showing my character grow in confidence whilst she is singing it. Not only does this give the song more meaning but it also allows it to be more engaging for the audience.

When it comes to my character in this song, she is talking about a boy that she has just met who is standing up to the jocks/ bullies. She is in awe of this and falls in love with him during this song. Along with this overtime she gains more confidence in her feelings and becomes more certain that she wants him.

So by getting louder and more confident over the course of the song will allow this theme to be clear to the audience through the singing.

Fight For Me - Heathers

Start of shy/ timid and quiet : character is very timid at the start of the number due to her social status - through out number gets more confident in what she is feeling towards this boy and is not afraid to try and fit it with what would be seen as acceptable for her to do when it comes to her feelings for this boy.
